Local Bocal October 2024

Dear Double Reeders, here is some news and some information about upcoming events.

Congratulations to all those who participated in “Impressionist Music to Reed By” on 15th September in St John’s Church.

We heard some wonderful works played by our ASO friends. Many thanks to Kim Falconer(flute), Josh Oates (oboe), Mitch Berick(clarinet), Emma Gregan (horn) and Tim Rosen for the SA première performance of Anne Cawrse’s “Honeybee”. This was a work commissioned by ADRSSA with funds we have accumulated in the last few years from events we have staged. Other works by Debussy, Dutilleux, Delius, de Falla, Ravel and Ibert were presented. Stephen van der Hoek did an excellent job of accompanying the various small groups and Kerry Hewett managed the Reed Choir very capably, too. Thanks to Josie for her excellent arrangements. We are sure that all the participants enjoyed this concert. The audience certainly did!

A number of us attended the Double Reed Mega Day at the Conservatorium which was great fun as well as being instructive and informative.

Alison, Josie, Josh and I (together with other SA players) attended the ADRS Conference at the Gold Coast at the end of September. It was good to be among like-minded people with a love of Double Reeds.

If you have not yet, please register now for the following:

Double Reeds on Show~ A Concert. Sunday 27 October 2pm to 4pm at Marryatville.

This was originally called a Performance Practice but it will be in the form of a concert. To distinguish it from our earlier session, there will be no judging, or feedback but will be simply an opportunity to show friends, relatives and fellow- players what you have achieved. Some of you will be playing in auditions or exams soon and should take this opportunity to show what you can do, and gain experience in playing in front of an appreciative audience. There will be an entry fee for audience members and players of $10 (ADRS members are admitted free for both playing and listening). There will be a discounted entry fee of $5 each for family members of players. By now you should have heard about this event from your teachers, but if not. direct any questions to me (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Carols on Ninth Avenue, St Peters Saturday 21 st December 8-9.30pm

There will be a rehearsal for this event at the Community Hall Pineview Village, Glenside on Wednesday 18 th December from 6pm. This will probably segue into a performance for the residents who would be unlikely to attend the St Peters event. More details to follow.

TEACHERS, please encourage your students to add their names to our mailing list so they will get information about sessions we are running or events they may wish to attend. We rely on you to let us know who your students are so that they can be included in our plans.

Best wishes,

Caryl Lambourn, Josie Hawkes OAM, Alison Stewart-Klein, Josh Oates, Tim Rosen.
