Local Bocal June 2025

Dear Double Reeders, some of us are still basking in the glow of a most successful Big Blow and Concert at Pineview Village. 21 of us rehearsed several popular works for a couple of hours on Sunday and then welcomed the Village People (no, not them) into their Community Hall and presented a lively and spirited program including the Potter Waltz, Miss Marple, Country Gardens, The Antiques Roadshow, the Magnificent Seven and a few others. Afterwards there was a Q and A session where we demonstrated our instruments and Josie explained how arrangements are made. The residents were thrilled with the music and the chat afterwards….and we were all thrilled with the refreshments that were kindly provided.

We have decided on several more events for you this year. Please look in your diaries and check that you can attend. Don’t leave it until the last minute while waiting for that job in the Berlin Philharmonic to come up. It’s quite difficult to organise things if we are not sure how many we are expecting.

Put these dates in your diary and let us know that you will be attending.

Marryatville HS has been booked for the following dates.  (Thanks, Josie!)
Sunday July 27th 2pm-4pm Performance Practice.

Sunday August 31st The St John’s Concert this year will have the theme of Film Music. Josie has been busy making arrangements and our ASO friends (Thanks, Josh) are working out a program, too. We have agreed that pieces by composers whose music  film- makers have used can be played. An example is Gounod who obviously didn’t write for films but his music was hi-jacked by Hitchcock among others so it’s likely that his music will be chosen for our concert.

The rehearsals for this, our major concert for the year, will be at Marryatville on:

 Wednesday August 6th 7pm-9pm

 Wednesday August 20th 7pm-9pm

 Saturday  August 30th 2pm-4pm

Wednesday 15th October 7pm-9pm Performance Practice.

We have tentatively labelled this Performance Practice but it could incorporate other activities and they don’t have to be solo performances. Get up a group!  Make some suggestions!

The date for Carols at St Peters is still being negotiated. Stay tuned!!

Please consider joining ADRS the national organisation for double reed players. This entitles you to discounts to our local activities, access to the very excellent journal, Reeding Matter edited by Josie Hawkes, discounted registration fees to our national competition and conference, and a wealth of other information. There has recently been a change-over of the President and Treasurer with our new President being Matthew Kneale, a great supporter of ADRSSA and the new Treasurer is Jill Noble, one of our own. Jill plays in the Norwood Symphony Orchestra and is an active member of ADRSSA. Go to the website www.adrs.org.au to see the benefits of being a member and then join up. It is important to support the Society so that it can support you.

TEACHERS, please encourage your students to add their names to our mailing list so they will get information about sessions we are running or events they may wish to attend. We rely on you to let us know who your students are so that they can be included in our plans.

Let us know when there will be concerts or recitals that you are performing in that will be of special interest to Double Reed players. Free advertising!

 Keep warm and best wishes,
