ADRS Events

This year’s ADRS Competition is being hosted in Brisbane and open to entrants of all states and skill levels. As well as solo competitions at different levels, there will be a section specifically for chamber music ensembles featuring double reeds.

The ADRS wishes to acknowledge Peter Collins for his generous sponsorship of this competition.

Competition Sections and Conditions of Entry

Beginner 

Time limit: 4 minutes
Eligibility: Open to candidates with a standard equivalent to AMEB Grades 1-2.
Two contrasting works, at least one of which must have piano accompaniment.
Prizes: 1st $150, 2nd $75, 3rd $40

Elementary

Time limit: 5 minutes
Eligibility: Open to candidates with a standard equivalent to AMEB Grades 3-4.
Two contrasting works, at least one of which must have piano accompaniment.
Prizes: 1st $250, 2nd $125, 3rd $65

Intermediate

Time limit: 8 minutes
Eligibility: Open to candidates with a standard equivalent to AMEB Grades 5-6.
Two contrasting works, at least one of which must have piano accompaniment.
Prizes: 1st $500, 2nd $250, 3rd $125

Open

Time limit: 12 minutes including set piece
Eligibility: Open to candidates with a standard equivalent to AMEB Grade 7 and above. Professional players are not eligible.
Set piece required plus one contrasting own choice piece with piano accompaniment.
Oboe Set Piece: Silvestrini Etude No. 1 Hotel des Roches Noires a Trouville from Six Etudes
Bassoon Set Piece: Milde Concert Study No. 9 in C# minor
Prizes: 1st Oboe Peter Collins Prize $1000, 1st Bassoon Peter Collins Prize $1000, 2nd $500, 3rd $250

Ensemble

Time limit: 12 minutes
Examples of eligibility: School students, secondary teachers, and casual performers.
Ensembles should consist of at least one oboe or bassoon player with a maximum of 9 performers per ensemble.
Prizes: 1st $500, 2nd $250, 3rd $100

 

Professional competition pianists will be available to all competitors for competition performances on the day. Rehearsals with these pianists is to be arranged by the competitor at their own expense. Competitors are welcome to provide their own pianistsat their own expense.

Competition Rules

1. Places are strictly limited and entries will be processed in order of receipt.
2. Contestants may not enter multiple solo sections, but should select the section which best fits their current skill level. Contestants are permitted to enter the Ensemble section as well as their appropriate solo section. 
3. Other double reed instruments from the oboe and bassoon families may be played e.g. fagottino, contrabassoon, cor anglais, etc. 
4. Time limits will be strictly adhered to. Appropriate cuts may be made to own choice works to conform to time limits.
5. All contestants must provide a photocopy of the music (piano part for accompanied works) on the day for use by the adjudicators. (This will be destroyed at the end of the day, in line with copyright laws.)
6. Prizes may be withheld or reduced where adequate standards are not met.
7. The adjudicators’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
8. All competitors will receive a written report after the announcement of the prize winners.
9. Previous 1st Prize winners in an ADRS National Competition (since 2009) may not enter the same section (or like section) they won. ADRS National Competition 2021

 

This year's Double Reed Competition will be held in Brisbane. The competition will feature four solo categories for oboe and bassoon spanning all skill levels from Beginner to Open.

Open

Oboe set pieces: 

  • Vivaldi Sonata in C minor Movements 1 and 2 with piano accompaniment
  • Orchestral excerpts from Orchester Probespiel, Edition Peters
  • Stravinsky 'Pulcinella Suite', II. Serenata and Variazione 1 (no repeat)
  • Strauss 'Der Rosenkavalier', pg 29 4 bars after Fig. 31 to Fig. 38
  • Plus own choice piece - up to 4 minutes, accompanied or unaccompanied

 

Bassoon set pieces: 

  • CPE Bach Sonata in d minor (arranged from the Flute Sonata in a minor by Mordecai Rechtman), Movement 2, no repeats.

  • Orchestral excerpts (scanned copy available on request following registration)

  • Beethoven Symphony 4, Movt. 1 

  • Tchaikovsky Symphony 4, Movt 2

  • Plus own choice piece with piano accompaniment

Intermediate

Time limit: 8 minutes
Eligibility: Open to candidates with a standard equivalent to AMEB Grades 5-6.
Two contrasting works, at least one of which must have piano accompaniment.
Prizes: 1st place $500, 2nd place $100 (sponsored by Brass Music Specialists), 3rd place $50
