ADRS 2024 International Artists
The 2024 ADRS National Conference is pleased to announce the addition of two visiting international artists to the list of presenters for the Gold Coast Conference September 28th and 29th.
Chi-Yuen Chen, Principal Oboe of l'Orchestre Nationale du Capitole de Toulouse.
Chi-Yuen Bobby CHENG is currently the Principal Oboe of l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, where he was appointed unanimously in 2016 under its musical director, Tugan SOKHIEV. Being a promising player in his generation, he appears regularly as guest principal oboe with BBC Symphony Orchestra, l’Orchestre National de France, l’Orchestre de Paris as well as London Symphony Orchestra. He is also a member of the “Quintette Promenade”, an ensemble formed with his colleagues in Toulouse; they were semi-finalist in the 2019 International Carl Nielsen Chamber music competition.
As a soloist, he has performed with Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, Aspen Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean Chamber Orchestra, as well as l’Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse. In 2018, he performed “Extase”, the concerto for Oboe by Qigang CHEN, at the National Centre for the Performing Arts at Beijing, upon an invitation by the composer himself. He has also given performances throughout Europe, the USA and in Asia.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Chi-Yuen commenced his oboe studies under the tutelage of Prof. Song-Lam YIU. He then graduated with “First Class Honours” and “Très bien avec félicitations du jury à l’unanimité”., respectively at the HKAPA in the class of YIU, and CNSMD Lyon in the class of Jean-Louis CAPEZZALI and Jérôme GUICHARD. He has performed in masterclasses for artists including François Leleux, Thomas Indermühle as well as Maurice Bourgue. He has also attended lessons with Jacques Tys.
During his studies, Chi-Yuen has participated in numerous local and international music competitions. His prizes include: 1st prize at the Fifth “Giuseppe Ferlendis” International Oboe Competition, Italy (2012); 1st prize in the Wind Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and School, USA (2012); 2nd prize at the 41st International Double Reed Society Oboe Competition, USA (2012); 2nd prize at the 9th Beijing Conservatory of Music Winds/Chamber Competition (Oboe Category), China (2011) and a 1st prize at the 1st International Asian Double Reed Association Oboe Competition, Thailand (2011).

Dr Yoshiyuki Ishikawa, Professor of Bassoon at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Professor of Bassoon Yoshiyuki Ishikawa is chair of woodwind studies at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music. He has performed and presented solo recitals, master classes and workshops at prestigious conservatories, schools of music and festivals in North America, Eastern and Southeast Asia, Europe and Oceania. His most recent guest performances include concerto performances, chamber music recitals and masterclasses in Thailand, China and the United States.
A leader in the double reed community, Ishikawa founded and is the president of the Asian Double Reed Association (ADRA), which maintains memberships in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand. From 1990 to 2020, he served as a member of the IDRS Executive Board holding positions of president, secretary and editor of IDRS online publications.
Ishikawa hosted the 51st annual conference of IDRS in July 2023 at the CU Boulder College of Music. The first IDRES live event in three years—due to COVID-19 pandemic-related delays—attracted more than 1,000 participants from around the globe.
In 2015, he co-sponsored the first Asian IDRS conference in Tokyo under the auspices of the third ADRA conference.
Ishikawa is chair of the International Bassoon Meetup Competition. He also has served on judging panels for the following: the IDRS Gillet and Young Artists Competition; the Tokyo Wind and Brass Competition; the Rimsky-Korsakov Competition and the Moscow Conservatory Wind and Percussion Competition; and the Asian Double Reed Association International Competitions.
